Lenworth Kelly, President of the Incorporated Master Builders Association of Jamaica, has said the government should be proactive in regularising informal settlements.
This, he said, should be part of efforts to lessen the effects of natural disasters.
Mr. Kelly said it is inevitable that informal settlements will be formed as people are not always able to afford formal housing options. But he warned that these informal settlements can create more danger for residents.
As such, the master builder urged the government to "be proactive in creating areas for occupation".
"Put in some basics. Scrape out some roads, define some lot sizes, and allow people to occupy it. With time, it allows you to...fill the infrastructure out in a more efficient way. So get them some water first and then you can, you know, later on put in paved roads or perhaps even put in proper sewer systems, but get the people in places that are ordered," he proposed.
Mr. Kelly was a guest Monday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
