Guy disapproves of end to mask mandate, COVID-19 testing for travellers

Dr. Morais Guy

Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy has disagreed with the government's decision to end the requirement for people to wear face masks in public places and test negative for COVID-19 before travelling to Jamaica.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Guy said Jamaica will face serious consequences if it goes ahead with the move, which is to take effect on April 15.

Arguing that only has about 25 per cent of the Jamaican population is fully vaccinated, the opposition spokesman warned that other countries with a higher vaccination rate are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases.

Of particular concern, he said, is the Omicron BA.2 subvariant, which is spreading through Europe and the United States.

"Why is it therefore that we are instituting these two measures in restricting and relaxing the measures right now?" he questioned, in light of the threat of the variant affecting Jamaica.

Travellers to Jamaica are currently required to present a negative COVID-19 test three days before arrival.

However, Prime Minister Andrew Holness had announced in March that this measure as well as the requirement for face masks in enclosed spaces would be lifted as of Friday, April 15.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has advised that all other measures under the Public Health Enforcement Measures (Coronavirus COVID-19) Order 2022 will remain unchanged at this time.
