Hanover man sentenced to 15 years for raping teenager, plus other charges

A man, who raped a teenager at gunpoint at her home in Hanover in 2021, will serve 15 years in prison.

Shannavan Brown, of Old Pen in the parish, was charged with two counts of rape, illegal possession of firearm, and making use of firearm to commit a scheduled offence.

Brown was found guilty following a trial in the Western Regional Gun Court in February this year.

On April 9, he was sentenced to 15 years at hard labour on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The court heard that Brown broke into the home of the complainant in September 2021 and sexually assaulted her in the presence of her family.

The matter was reported to the police, who launched an investigation.

The investigation led the police to Brown, who was arrested and charged three months later.

The police said the start of the trial in the Western Regional Gun Court was delayed on several occasions due to the witnesses being threatened by Brown and other people.

The witnesses were placed on the Witness Protection Programme; the matter then proceeded to trial and Brown's subsequent conviction.
