'He did not do it': Mother questions son's involvement in pregnant woman's murder and his alleged suicide

Claire Bailey, the mother of Markland Hayles

The mother of 20-year-old Markland Hayles, who was accused of killing a pregnant woman in Rhoden Hall, Kellits, Clarendon on Sunday, is claiming that her son had nothing to do with the murder.

The police reported that Mr. Hayles confessed to the killing.

However, in an interview with Radio Jamaica News, his mother, Claire Bailey, questioned the police account of the incident, noting that she had asked her son about the woman's death "and he say he [did] not do it."

His mother is also doubtful about the details surrounding her son's death.

Mr. Hayles allegedly committed suicide on Monday while in police custody.

"Where him would get the cord to do the suicide?.... [Y]ou don't go inna jail with no belt, you don't go inna jail with no shoes lace, you don't go inna jail with nut'n, not even wallet," Ms Bailey contended.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into Mr. Hayles death.
