Immigration officers agree to end protest

By Clinton McGregor

Jamaica's immigration officers have agreed to end their protest action and to return to work Tuesday night.

The development follows a meeting at the Ministry of Labour on Tuesday afternoon, between the management of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) and the National Workers Union (NWU) which represents the immigration officers.

NWU General Seretary Granville Valentine told Radio Jamaica News that the parties have agreed to resume negotiations with the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday regarding the wage package under the compensation review.

The Labour Ministry is to get an update on the talks on Friday.

There have been chaotic scenes at the island's two major international airports since Monday after the immigration officers mounted their protest action over salaries and benefits.

Arriving passengers have been subjected to long lines as they wait to be processed at the airports.
