Investigators probing treatment of Jamaican farm workers in Canada returned home

Trade unionist Helene Davis Whyte

The last batch of investigators assigned by the Ministry of Labour to probe allegations of poor treatment of Jamaican farm workers in Canada have returned to the island.

Members of the Fact Finding team returned home on Monday.

This was disclosed by the Chair of the Task Force, Helene Davis-Whyte.

Mrs Davis-Whyte says the team is to prepare a report for submission to Labour Minister Karl Samuda which she says is expected to take approximately 4 weeks.

Mrs Davis Whyte says despite the hesitancy of some of the workers, valuable information has been obtained to support the investigations.

Approximately 600 Jamaicans from seventy farms were interviewed by members of the task force.

She says the recommendations of the team will be made public "..the minister will relay the report in parliament and from there a determination will be made as to how to treat with whatever recommendations come out of the report."

Labour Minister Karl Samuda last month appointed the tripartite team to observe operations at Canadian farms after a number of Jamaicans complained that they were working under inhumane conditions.
