It's now Roger Clarke High School

Balaclava High School in St. Elizabeth was on Thursday renamed Roger Clarke High, in honour of the former Member of Parliament, who died last year.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Education Minister Ronald Thwaites were among those who spoke at the renaming ceremony.

Roger Clarke served as MP for North East St. Elizabeth, upon the death of the incumbent, Sidney Pagon, in the early 1990s, until 2007, when he switched to Central Westmoreland, the constituency of his birth.

Clarke, a popular politician, earlier served as a councilor and then mayor in the St. Elizabeth Parish Council.

In the national government, he first served as Minister of State for Agriculture, then was promoted to Cabinet rank, as Minister of Local Government & Works, in 1995.

He returned to the Ministry of Agriculture, as Minister, in 1998, and served in that capacity until 2007, when the People's National Party lost the general election. Upon the Party's return to office in January 2012, he was again appointed Minister of Agriculture, and remained in that post until his sudden passing in August, 2014.

Balaclava High was established in 1976.
