Jamaica urged to embrace AI

By Halshane Burke

The country is being encouraged to embrace the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Senator Aubyn Hill says AI, if properly managed, can be a useful tool.

AI is the ability of a computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly undertaken by humans.

Senator Hill said once policies are put in place to ensure responsible use of the technology, there should be little concern with maximising its use throughout society.

He said the government must ensure that the requisite policies are in place to harness the potential from AI while at the same time implement controls to manage the risks and challenges.

Addressing concerns that AI could put some jobs at risk, Senator Hill stated that similar arguments were put forward with the advent of computers.

Senator Hill was addressing media and business stakeholders at the two-day Outsource2Jamaica conference at the Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort and Spa in St. James.
