Jamaican hero Marcus Garvey to be declared honorary citizen of Costa Rica

Legislators in Costa Rica have unanimously voted in favour of declaring Jamaican national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey an Honorary Citizen of the Republic.

During the discussion of the initiative, representative of the New Republic, Rosalia Brown said Garvey was a leader whose fight has left an indelible mark on history.

He said it was with great pride that the Legislative Assembly proposed to declare Garvey with this designation in recognition of his tireless efforts in defence of the rights of people of African descent and his contribution to Costa Rican culture.

Brown recalled that Garvey traveled throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, working as a journalist and reporting the exploitation of migrant workers on plantations.

He noted that during his second visit to Costa Rica, in 1921, Garvey was enthusiastically received by thousands of people, he caused a great impact on the workers, especially the Afro-descendant population and he met with then-President Julio Acosta, to whom he presented proposals to improve the living conditions of workers in the coastal region.

Brown said Garvey's example of leadership and his fight continue to inspire future generations.
