Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced on Sunday that, come next year, the government will be reducing General Consumer Tax on electricity to make it more affordable for customers of the Jamaica Public Service Company (the country's lone electricity distributor) and that it will also reduce electricity theft.
Dr Holness, addressing the Annual Conference of his governing Jamaica Labour Party at Kingston's National Arena, also announced that JPS customers who use the pre-paid system will see an improvement in their costs come next year.
This will be made possible under a new arrangement to be introduced by the light and power company.
Acknowledging growing discontent about the state of the economy, high cost of living, which show the JLP trailing in the polls, the Prime Minister said he has heard the people's cries and will be responding to them.
He also declared that his administration will immediately begin the process of removing bureaucratic red-tape that he said has been stifling economic growth and efficiency.
