JTA decries recent attacks on teachers

Winston Smith

Following the stabbing of a primary school teacher during what is believed to be an attempted robbery in Brown's Town, St. Ann on Friday, the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) is appealing to Jamaicans to protect the nation's teachers.

It's reported that the teacher was walking from Servite Primary School when she refused to grant a man a phone call request.

She was pushed to the ground and stabbed in the back.

The teacher was taken to hospital where she was treated and released.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News, JTA President Winston Smith said the robbing of a teacher is an effort in futility since they are "so poorly paid".

"Teachers are not rich, they have no money," he declared. "All you are doing is killing the future of other children and causing more to become like you because the teacher who is supposed to be teaching them is laid up in a hospital bed if they are fortunate, and if the more unfortunate situation reach them, then they'll be laid up in a morgue."

Last week, the throat of a St. Elizabeth based teacher was slashed and she was left for dead on a remote road in Lacovia.

She survived and remains in hospital.

No motive has been established for the attack.
