Jamaica's two major political parties say they are not worried about the results of the latest RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll showing that they have each lost significant public support in the last year.

The poll shows the Jamaica Labour Party nine percentage points ahead of the People's National Party.

However, the JLP's support has dropped by eleven percentage points and the PNP's by eight percentage points.

PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell told Beyond the Headlines host Dionne Jackson Miller on Wednesday that the poll is instructive.

"We are noting them keenly and we are using them as a line in the sand to establish where we are and what it is that we need to do as a political movement...to change our favourability and to increase our numbers," he said, insisting that the party was "not at the point of being worried."

Dr. Campbell added that he is also heartened by the finding that many of those who said they would vote for the PNP if an election were called, said they want to see what its president, Mark Golding, can do.

For Senator Matthew Samuda of the Jamaica Labour Party, who is also Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of National Security, the results are encouraging.

He said the dip in support was expected, due to some of the decisions the government has had to take, as the country tries to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Yes, we were expecting some slippage and the slippage is in line with our expectation. But that your competitor has also seen some slippage, I think, is also quite encouraging," he reasoned.
