Kingston's Mayor Desmond McKenzie has expressed major concern over the allegations of fraud linked to three unnamed Councillors in the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC).
The Office of the Contractor General announced Monday afternoon that it had uncovered evidence of what appears to be a major fraud in the award of contracts at the Corporation involving at least three of the KSAC's councillors.
Mr. McKenzie says the allegations are now the subject of a major investigation by the Corporation.
"(It’s) very frightening and I’ve convened a meeting of the senior management of the KSAC and I’ve ordered an immediate investigation into the allegations. The town clerk along with the deputy mayor, the chairman of the finance committee and the city treasurer have been asked to investigate this matter," Mayor McKenzie told RJR News Monday afternoon.
He also said he will be contacting Greg Christie, the Contractor General, and has promised full co-operation of the KSAC in the matter.
The KSAC Chairman says he has yet to be furnished with the names of the Councillors who have been linked to the alleged fraud.
"We have not been supplied with that information."
