Superintendent Coleridge Minto, head of the St. Elizabeth Police
The St. Elizabeth police have smashed what is believed to be an illegal distillery operation in which counterfeit rum was being sold to the public.
Commanding officer Superintendent Coleridge Minto told Radio Jamaica News that three people were taken into custody during the early morning operation in the Windsor housing scheme.
"Approximately 5 a.m. this morning, the police conducted a targeted operation in the Siloah housing scheme which resulted in the seizure of several containers of bulk rum. The operation was carried out by a specialised team armed with search warrants which were executed at two separate residential premises. Resulting from the operation, a total of 55 gallons of rum was confiscated and three individuals to include a female were taken into custody. The police are continuing their investigation into this matter," said Superintendent Minto.
A number of rum bottles were seized at the location.
The authorities suspect that the counterfeit rum was being bottled for the black market.
