More than 100 suspects who were being held under the States of Emergency have been charged.

The detainees were charged Monday with various crimes including murders and shootings.

The enhanced security measures are set to end on Monday and detainees not charged at the end of the measure would have to be released.

Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of Jamaica Constabulary Force Corporate Communications Unit, told Radio Jamaica News on Monday that more than 200 people were in custody, with more than 100 now charged while 44 people are set to be released.

She admitted that the police still have an interest in several of those to be released, "but in keeping with the requirements of the law governing the State of Public Emergency, those individuals will be released and the detectives will continue with the various investigations around these individuals."

Several detainees who were under investigation for serious crimes in the St. Andrew South Police Division are among those charged.

Senior Superintendent Wayne Cameron, head of the division, told Radio Jamaica News that 13 suspects were charged Monday with murders and shootings.
