Dunstan Bryan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health

The National Arena in St. Andrew is to be outfitted as a 72 bed field hospital to deal with a possible upsurge in cases of coronavirus in Jamaica.

Dunstan Bryan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, said $182 million will be spent on establishing the field hospital.

He said Cabinet and the Jamaica Defence Force will lead on the establishment of the facility.

Mr. Bryan made the disclosure Tuesday morning during a meeting of the Special Select Committee of Parliament overseeing Jamaica's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

In the meantime, Mr. Bryan said 80,000 face shields are to arrive in Jamaica by next week for frontline healthcare workers.

He also disclosed that the ministry has nine million gloves and 500,000 N95 masks arrived in the island on Monday for distribution in the public and private sector.
