Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert

New Speaker of the House of Representatives Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert told members of parliament who were sworn in this afternoon that they must lead by example.

She also emphasised that MPs are in the House to serve.

"Our children, our young adults, our men and women in this blessed country Jamaica are expecting the highest standard of conduct from us, and so members, we will have order in this House. We will be respectful. We will not hesitate to represent our country in the best possible way. May I remind us all that we are not here as masters but as servants," she charged.

The House of Representatives will for the first time have two women in the post of House Speaker and deputy.

Juliet Holness, Member of Parliament for St. Andrew East Rural, has been appointed deputy speaker.
