Douglas Orane, former Independent Senator, speaking on That's a Rap with Earl Moxam
Douglas Orane, a former Independent Senator, is in support of a proposal from Opposition Leader Mark Golding for an expansion of the Senate to include independent members.
Mr Orane, now a retired business executive, was one of two persons to serve one term as an Independent Members of the Upper House, from 1997 to 2002, under a special arrangement engineered by then Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson.
Mr Patterson allocated two of the governing majority's 13 seats to non-affiliated persons, while retaining his party's dominance in the Senate.
In an interview with host Earl Moxam on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, on Sunday, said the appointment of independent senatorsthe former Senator said institutionalizing the role of Independent Senators under the Jamaican Constitution would help to reduce political tribalism.
He reiterated that several other Caribbean countries have independent senators and wants Jamaica to follow suit.
