A Justice of the Peace is behind bars after being charged with fraudulent conversion and engaging in a transaction that involves criminal property.

The accused, 50-year-old Georgia Messam-Whyte, a paralegal clerk of Village Green, St. Ann, was charged on Tuesday.

It's reported that between September 2018 and April 2019, Mrs Messam-Whyte received more than $27 million from a businesswoman to purchase a property, but she failed to turn over the funds to the contracted attorney.

The police were alerted and an investigation launched which led to her arrest.

She is scheduled to appear before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on February 16.
