Pay more attention to mental health needs of children, psychiatrist urges parents

Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Ganesh Shetty

Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Ganesh Shetty is urging parents and guardians to pay more attention to the mental health needs of their children and seek professional help for them.

Dr. Shetty, who was a guest Monday on The Morning Agenda, on Power 106, said suicide is the second leading cause of death among children and adolescents globally.

On Friday, nine-year-old Tyreek Bennett allegedly died by suicide at his house in Central Village, St. Catherine.

Dr. Shetty said most children who attempt suicide have significant mental health issues, including depression.

He explained that children suffering from depression become sad, withdrawn and sometimes experience trouble  sleeping, eating, concentrating or getting motivated, adding that children with a family history of depression may be predisposed to the illness.

Dr. Shetty said parenting style and cultural norms can sometimes cause children to suffer from depression.

Parents and guardians must spend quality time with their children, he stressed.
