Police to set up special security operations around key infrastructure projects

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) have been tasked with establishing special security operations around key infrastructure projects.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the aim is to ensure major projects are not hijacked by criminals seeking to illicitly benefit from public resources through extortion or holding up work schedules.

"We have seen elements of this along the South Coast Highway Improvement project and the resulting impact on crime particularly in the Bull Bay area," Mr. Holness noted.

He said one of the main suspects in that situation was "apprehended and fatally wounded, so he's no longer a player in that space".

The Prime Minister was making his contribution to the 2023/24 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
