Preliminary enquiry in Roger Clarke case to begin on December 16

A quarter of a million dollar bail bond was posted for Roger Clarke, former Government Minister and People's National Party (PNP) Spokesman on Agriculture, who he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Mr. Clarke was answering to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The politician was charged following a ruling handed down by the Director of Public Prosecutions on Wednesday.

St. Catherine resident Derron Nicholson died when a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser driven by Mr. Clarke collided with his motorbike along the Nightingale Grove Road in St. Catherine.

A small number of high profile members of the PNP gathered in the Spanish Town RM Court to lend moral support to the beleaguered MP, who arrived 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the court proceedings.

He was later instructed to enter the prisoner's dock.

"He was brought before the court, bail was offered in the sum of $250,000 with a surety. He has been bailed and has gone about his private business. He is dealing with Mr. Nicholson's death well and in terms of his defence, we feel that that he will be exonerated," KD Knight, Mr. Clarke's attorney, told RJR News.

Mr. Clarke is to return to court on December 16 at which time a preliminary enquiry is scheduled to begin.

PNP came out in support of Clarke

Meanwhile grass root PNP supporters took up positions outside while the case against Mr. Clarke was being heard.

The small band of supporters clad in party colours greeted the troubled MP after he made his court appearance.

"Comrade Roger Clarke is a part of the family, he is in a bit of a situation and we're going to give him moral support," said Damion Crawford, President of the PNP Youth Organsiation who was at the courthouse.
