Principal cautions Education Ministry on auxiliary fee removal

Ahead of Friday's meeting with principals and chairmen of schools to discuss the expanded lunch programme and the removal of auxiliary fees, Jasford Gabriel, Principal of Manchester High School, is issuing a caution to the Education Ministry.

Senator Ruel Reid, Education Minister, during Wednesday's sitting of the Standing Finance Committee, said he would meet with school administrators to discuss the removal of auxiliary fees and the increased monetary allocation.

However, Mr. Gabriel has said the removal of auxiliary fees needs to be carefully thought through and managed properly. Similar to other principals, he said even with a high compliance rate by parents, Manchester High still has challenges.

"As it stands now, with an auxiliary compliance rate that is much higher than what the Ministry is offering, we still have a hard time trying to meet all the needs and cater to all the varied challenges and needs of our students," he said.

He said the Education Ministry's proposal would have to "be a case where special consideration would have to be given in some cases just to make sure the school is not worst off."
