A team comprising the St. James Police, the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch and Jamaica Customs Agency is now trying to ascertain the origin of the 20 handguns seized yesterday at the Sangster International Airport.
The weapons along with 40 magazines were discovered about 3:30 pm at the cargo section.
A customs broker is being questioned in connection with the shipment.
Head of Area One Police Headquarters, Assistant Commissioner Clifford Chambers, says an intensive probe is being carried out.
“While this has put a dent in the gun smuggling operation, we want to advise t hat regardless of how organized these criminals are - all efforts will be made to apprehend and lay charges on them,” he said.
It's reported that the 20 firearms are 9 millimetre pistols.
ST. CATHERINE
Meanwhile, the St. Catherine South Police seized two illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition yesterday.
A man who is a person of interest in a recent murder and other crimes including robberies in the division, was arrested.
It’s reported that shortly after 1 a.m. the police conducted operations in Portmore resulting in the arrest of the suspect and the seizure of a .38 pistol and a Magnum revolver containing three rounds.
Commanding Officer for the St Catherine South Division, Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, is asking persons who have been robbed in recent weeks, especially by persons travelling on motorcycles, to report the incidents to the police.
