Professor Densil Williams has been named principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
Professor Williams replaces Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, Professor Dale Webber, who resumes teaching and research duties as a marine biologist.
The University of the West Indies says Professor Williams, who is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal of the Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda, will take up his post from August 1.
UWI Registrar Dr. D. Maurice Smith says at its last meeting, the University Council deferred its decision to appoint a principal as the Jamaican government had requested additional consultation time.
Dr. Smith says having completed this process and consequently advised the Chancellor of the outcome, the University Council proceeded to appoint Professor Williams on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor in keeping with the University's Statutes and Ordinances.
The UWI said the new principal has built a career in business and academia for over 22 years and has held a remarkable record of public service, research and scholarly work serving on a number of boards of state entities, private sector organisations, committees, as well as regional and international editorial boards.
