Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has announced a revised roadmap for the rehabilitation of the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.
Dr. Tufton on Thursday signed a $1.7 billion contract for the penultimate phase of the project.
He disclosed that the final phase will be carried out using emergency procurement.
The intention, he said, was to "recognise the timelines that are involved to try and shrink that timeline so that we can get to a date of completion within a much shorter period than would have allowed".
Dr. Tufton revealed that 24 to 25 months out of about 60 months of the Cornwall Regional project have been spent on procurement alone, which he acknowledged was "just dragged on for a very long time".
He said this could no longer be tolerated because it would represent a neglect of the people the hospital is meant to serve.
The main building at Cornwall Regional Hospital has been closed for rehabilitative work since 2018.
Despite several timelines for completion, all of them have been missed.
