Nurses in the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) are reportedly restive because of the non-payment of their statutory deductions.

News emerged on Saturday that no payments were made in February and March.

Patsy Edwards Henry, President of the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ), said the members had planned to protest but she stepped in to help them remain calm.

"Because when [SERHA] does not pay over our deductions, we now are subject to late fees and it is the nurse who has to pay the late fees," she lamented.

Mrs Edwards Henry said the nurses are especially upset because they were informed only Friday about the non-payment.

"This happened in February and March and we get a letter, a memo dated the 9th of April. Come on, if something like this happened, we would have expected you to say it earlier that the necessary risk management could be put in place," she asserted while speaking Monday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.

Last weekend, Wentworth Charles, Chairman of the South Eastern Regional Health Authority, told Radio Jamaica that he requested a report from the agency.

Calls by Radio Jamaica News to his phone for an update went unanswered.

Compounding stressful situation

Dr. Andrew Manning, President of the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ),  said the non-payment of statutory deductions for health personnel is further compounding the stressful situation the workers have been faced with.

He said the government should find a way to honour its obligations to the employees.

"We are all under trying times but we all have to do what we have to do to meet the obligations," he declared.
