The St. Catherine Municipal Corporation is assessing the damage caused by Thursday morning's blaze at the Linstead Market.
Fire believed to be the work of arsonists destroyed at least 20 stalls at the St. Catherine-based market.
Norman Scott, Chairman of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation, says efforts will be made to assist legitimate vendors.
"I’m not even sure if everyone was registered and were legitimately paying their user fee. So again, we’re going to be looking at... persons who were duly registered and who were paying their vendors fees, to see whatever assistance we can render to those persons who have lost all their belongings," he said.
The Spanish Town mayor has called for the perpetrators to be quickly brought to justice.
"I really want to say to individuals who have in their intentions to really cause mayhem in the society to desist from doing so. And I’m going to be calling on the police to leave no stones unturned; if [this] is the act of arsonists, to make sure that those individuals are caught, brought to books and are dealt with according to the law," he urged.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade said the blaze started about 4:20 Thursday morning.
