The effects of the water crisis facing the country have extended to the health sector.
RJR News has been informed that all surgeries at the nation's only maternity hospital, the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, have been cancelled today because of the lack of water.
Frustrated with the situation, medical practitioners at the hospital Thursday morning walked off the job to protest against what they say are unhygienic work conditions due to inadequate water.
No water, No work ... that was the chant from the staff of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital as Nurses and Patient Care Assistants protested outside the gates of the facility.
The nurses say they have to work with limited water supply which has been ongoing for some time.
They explained that initially the water shortage would affect them only at nights, but now the situation has worsened.
They turned up for work Wednesday and Thursday morning but found no water.
As a result all surgeries were cancelled Wednesday.
The nurses at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital say they are only able to attend to emergency cases:
They argue that health facilities should be a priority, because water is essential to their operations.
Water was later trucked to the hospital.
