Torrington Park building deemed unsafe following inspection by City Engineer

Xavier Chevannes, City Engineer for the Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation

The Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation has concluded that the remaining structure at the apartment building in Torrington Park, St Andrew where a staircase collapsed, injuring one resident on Sunday, is now unsafe for residential use.

The City Engineer and other personnel from the KSAMC conducted an assessment on the structure on Monday.

City Engineer Xavier Chevannes reported that the assessment revealed clear danger to residents, with the other staircases also being at risk of collapsing.

Mr Chevannes, speaking on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, revealed that a Dangerous Structure Notice was issued following Monday's assessment.

He said lack of maintenance led to Sunday's collapse of the staircase.
