Tropical Storm Bret forms in the Atlantic

Tropical Storm Bret formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday and became the second named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.

Tropical Depression Three strengthened Monday afternoon, enough to become Tropical Storm Bret, reaching winds of 40 miles per hour.

A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center says it has been closely monitoring the system, which entered the Atlantic Ocean from Africa last week.

The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which began at the start of this month, officially ends at the end of November.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects a range of 12 to 17 total named storms during the period, with five to nine of them expected to become hurricanes, and one to four, major hurricanes.
