The UK government's chief scientific adviser has warned that Britain could see 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October if no further action is taken to limit the spread.
Sir Patrick Vallance said that would be expected to lead to about 200-plus deaths daily.
It comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepares to chair an emergency committee meeting Tuesday morning, then make a statement in the House of Commons.
Speaking at Downing Street, Sir Patrick stressed the figures given were not a prediction, but added that the epidemic is doubling roughly every seven days.
Some 3,899 coronavirus cases and 18 deaths were reported in the UK on Sunday.
