US Special Envoy claims Jamaica most "like-minded" Caribbean partner on security

United States Special Envoy for Latin America & the Caribbean Mauricio Claver-Carone claimed on Wednesday  that Jamaica is probably America's most like-minded and key partner in the Caribbean from a security perspective in regards to dealing with counter narcotics.

He confirmed that security issues would feature prominently during the bi-lateral talk on Wednesday morning between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Claver-Carone said deepening this coordination will help, not only with improving the security and safety of Americans, but also in dealing with the shared challenge in Haiti.

He added that the US would also be seeking to strengthen its partnership with Jamaica in maintaining commercial shipping routes, claiming as well that tackling crime in Jamaica was also an agenda item.

The concern about the Cuban medical programme was also expected to be a talking point but the US Special Envoy said it would be a missed opportunity, with the importance that the Secretary of State and the US President are giving to the Caribbean, to "waste" the entire visit on a discussion about Cuban doctors.

He asserted that the focus of the engagement with the Caribbean leaders should be on energy security, economic development and Haiti.

While in Jamaica, Rubio will also participate in bilateral meetings with the heads of government from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti.
