Vybz Kartel, co-convicts granted leave to take case to Privy Council

Entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-convicts have been granted conditional leave to take their case to the Privy Council.

Leave was granted Friday morning by the Appeal Court.

Kartel, whose given name is Adidjah Palmer, along with Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John, have been sentenced for the murder of  Clive Lizard Williams.

Bert Samuels, a member of the defence team, told Radio Jamaica News on Friday that they are elated by the court's granting of conditional leave to appeal the ruling.

"We've been happy that there are some jury grounds which have gone and some admission of evidence grounds which should have been permitted to go to the Privy Council. The Court of Appeal has seen it necessary that those grounds need to be resolved by another court. So it's a very good day for us and we're looking forward for victory in the Privy Council," he said.

Mr. Samuels said the defence team is expecting the matter to be resolved by the Privy Council before the end of this year.

He said the documents will be prepared within a month and sent to the UK based court so the defence team is "looking for, if it is expedited, a Christmas decision."

In April all four men lost their appeals in the Court of Appeal.

The three-member panel ruled unanimously that the appeals be refused and their convictions be affirmed, but a minor deduction was made in their sentences because of  the time they spent in custody prior to sentencing.
