Voting underway in Trinidad & Tobago's national election

The people of Trinidad & Tobago are voting today to elect a new government in what is predicted to be a keenly contested race.

Prime Minister Stuart Young is facing the electorate for the first time as leader of the People's National Movement (PNM), having only assumed the office last month following the resignation of Dr Keith Rowley.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persaud Bissasor is hoping to convince voters that the country would be in better hands with her as Head of Government, leading the United National Congress.

The vote comes in the wake of the United States canceling the licence to allow Trinidad & Tobago to extract natural gas from Venezuela, which was seen as a game changer for the twin-island republic's economy.

In a last ditch effort on Sunday, Prime Minister Young told supporters that he was going to fight for the gas deal.

It will be the first election after the Elections and Boundaries Commission redrew the lines for 16 constituencies, and renamed five, as electors cast their ballot for the 41 seat legislature.
