DaCosta lands feature to virtually seal trainer's championship

Commentary by Track Announcer Brian Rickman

17 time champion Wayne DaCosta has all but retained the local trainer's championship after his chestnut colt Run Thatcher Run upstaged Anthony "Baba" Nunes' favourite Earn Your Stripes to land the Jamaica 2 Year Old Stakes over a mile on the Boxing Day programme at Caymanas Park.

Run Thatcher Run who went off as the 9-5 second favourite with Omar Walker aboard, came home ahead of Supreme Soul, Earn Your Stripes and Corazon in the $4-million contest. Run Thatcher Run returned 1 minute, 39.1 for the distance.

Meanwhile, Nunes' Bigdaddykool upset the favourite and reigning Horse of the Year She's A Maneater to win the Miracle Man Cup over 9 furlongs and 25 yards. Bigdaddykool was brilliantly ridden to victory by three time former champion jockey Dane Nelson.

DaCosta and Nunes each had a double on the day's programme, with DaCosta now leading Nunes by over 1.5 million dollars in stakes earnings. The curtain comes down on the 2018 local racing calendar on Saturday.
