Ed Sheeran wins copyright battle over 'Shape of You'

British singer Ed Sheeran has won a High Court copyright battle over his 2017 hit single Shape of You.

A judge ruled on Wednesday that the singer-songwriter had not plagiarised the 2015 song Oh Why by Sami Chokri.

The grime artiste, who performs under the name Sami Switch, had claimed that Sheeran's track was "strikingly similar" to the refrain in his.

After the ruling, Sheeran stated that such "baseless" claims are way too common, and are aimed at squeezing money out of artistes eager to avoid the expense of a trial.

He added that coincidences are bound to happen if 60,000 songs are being released every day on Spotify.
