Shaggy receives honorary doctorate from Brown University

Recording artiste Shaggy has been conferred with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University, an Ivy League university in the United States.
 
The announcement was met with resounding applause, with those in attendance chanting his name.
 
During his acceptance speech, Shaggy spoke of his upbringing in Rae Town, Kingston, and highlighted some of his dancehall and reggae heroes including Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Barrington Levy, Yellowman and Super Cat.
 
He also gave an overview of his music career, which started with his first two hits Oh Carolina and Boombastic, and the only diamond-selling dancehall or reggae album Hot Shot
 
Shaggy ended his speech with a performance of the hits Boombastic, Angel and It Wasn't Me, as the graduating class sang along enthusiastically. 
 
He was one of nine people who received honorary doctorates from Brown University. 
 
The Undergraduate Class of 2020 Commencement Ceremony was held for students who missed their in-person ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
