Aubyn Hill, Head of the Sugar Divestment Team, is defending the deal between the Government and Italian company Eridania Suisse for the sale of 79,000 tons of sugar.
This follows claims from the Opposition that the government is struggling to fulfill its obligations.
Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture, Roger Clarke, has questioned the wisdom of the deal given the warning that Jamaica Sugar Holdings will not be able to satisfy the commitment made.
But according to Mr. Hill the Opposition Spokesman's concerns are unfounded as the results of the deal have been satisfactory.
“The deal was US$15 million to help pre-finance the 2009/2010 crop and that money, about $1.3 billion, was repaid in April of this year. SCJ Holdings retained that money so I don’t understand what the issue is,” Mr. Hill said.
