Amendments to the Minimum Wage Act to be debated

Parliament will turn attention to amendments to the Minimum Wage Act when it resumes sittings on Tuesday, January 11.

The amendments, which were tabled three weeks ago by Labour Minister Pearnel Charles, are scheduled to be debated.

The proposed changes include huge fines for employers who pay their workers below minimum wage.

The penalties will move from one thousand dollars or three months in jail to one million dollars and a one year prison term.

They also call for more stringent fines for persons who commit other breaches of the Act.
