The new
$5,000 note is to be officially launched on Monday.
The new bank note, which will be the highest valued local currency, is to be launched by Governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) Derick Latibeaudiere Monday afternoon.
The bank announced last week that the new high security note will be introduced into circulation in September of this year.
The note will bear the image of the late former Prime Minister Hugh Lawson Shearer.
A proof note of the new bill will be presented to Dr. Denise Eldemire Shearer, Mr. Shearer's widow, at the launch.
And while analysts say Jamaicans have nothing to fear, at least one commentator has expressed discomfort about the high value bank note being introduced into circulation.
Economic observer, Dr. Davidson Daway says he is not at ease about a new bank note being issued at a time of economic crisis.
"I don't think it's a great idea as at this particular time, Jamaica can get in trouble for printing a $5,000 bill, I mean we can hardly afford to print a $50 bill much more to have a $5,000 bill. Right now we're in a financial crunch and we have to have certain control over how we institute certain measures," he said.
