The Bank of Jamaica says the rate at which commercial banks are increasing lending to businesses slowed significantly in June this year.
The BOJ says business lending grew by 6.5 per cent in June 2026, down from 10 per cent in the corresponding month last year.
However, the rate of growth in credit to individuals rose to 7.9 per cent in June, up from 6.9 per cent a year earlier.
Overall, the growth in credit extended to businesses and individuals slowed to 7.4 per cent in June, compared with 8 per cent in June 2025.
The latest figures come against the background of continued contraction in the Jamaican economy.
The Planning Institute of Jamaica reported on Tuesday that the economy shrank by 2.9 per cent during the second quarter of this year.
That followed contractions of 4.1 per cent in the first quarter and 7.3 per cent during the final quarter of last year.
