Digicel Guyana CEO Gregory Dean is optimistic that the Telecommunications Bill will be passed next month ending the more than 20-year-old monopoly of Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company, GT&T in the provision of international calls.
According to Digicel, this change, when it is implemented, will also allow the company to invest significantly more in upgrading its mobile telephone network, provide additional telecommunications services and improve those it currently offers.
Digicel has launched an advertising campaign, promoting the National Assembly’s commitment to have the legislation approved before the commencement of the parliamentary recess on August 10.
During an interview with reporters Mr. Dean said liberalisation of the telecommunications sector will set the stage for the company to become fully competitive with GT&T.
While the prospects are appealing, Mr Dean said Digicel is mindful of the challenges with liberalisation.
