Caribbean reparations delegation off to Europe next week

The Caribbean Reparations Movement is stepping up its advocacy, with leaders of the Movement set to be in Europe next week for a series of political engagements.

 

The delegation's engagements will start in Brussels on Tuesday, 1 July 2024, where they will brief MEPs from across Europe. They will then travel to London for a meeting with Parliamentarians on Wednesday, 2 July. 

  

This trip is meant to give higher visibility to the Caribbean's lobby for the UK and other European nations to respond to formal demands for reparations for slavery and its enduring impacts across the region. 

  

The European trip is being organized by The Repair Campaign, a movement for reparatory justice in the Caribbean, guided by the CARICOM Ten Point Plan for Reparatory Justice.

 

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of the West Indies has also been engaged to develop 15 country-specific reparatory justice plans to address the enduring effects of slavery and colonialism. 

 

Participants in the delegation will include Professor Don Marshall, University Director SALISES, Dr Halimah Deshong, the University of the West Indies, Professor Jean Marie Théodat, Director of the Caribbean delegation of the AUF, Uriel Sabajo, of the National Reparations Committee for Suriname, Carla Astaphan, Chair of the National Reparations Committee for St Kitts & Nevis, Dr Michael Banner, author, Dean and Fellow of Trinity College, University of Cambridge, Fiona Compton, artist and Caribbean historian, and Denis O’Brien, founder of The Repair Campaign.
