Emergency government contracts now required to be made public

The Government of Jamaica has introduced a new rule requiring all emergency government contracts to be made public on its online procurement platform, Government of Jamaica Electronic Procurement System (GOJEP).

The move, which took effect on November 12, is part of the amended Public Procurement Act and is aimed at strengthening transparency and public oversight, especially during crises when government spending often
increases.

Under the new rule, ministries and agencies must publish Emergency Contract Award Notices within one month of issuing a contract.

The notices must include the name of the contractor, the contract value, the reason for the emergency award and the goods or services being procured.

The Ministry of Finance says while emergencies require swift decisions, the public still has a right to know how funds are being spent.
