Despite the country still seeing a high level of unemployment, the Government has collected one billion dollars more than it had projected in Pay As You Earn, PAYE.
Data from the Ministry of Finance show that between April and August $25.2 billion in PAYE went into the country's coffers.
The Finance Ministry had expected to collect $24.2 billion during the period.
The increase in PAYE collections coincided with the implementation of Tax Administration Jamaica's Revenue Enhancement and Arrears Project (REAP).
REAP has been developed as part of an expanded and sustained PAYE audit programme which targets employers who deduct taxes from employees’ emoluments but fail to make payment to the government or do not deduct the correct amount of payroll taxes.
