Jamaica's import bill from EU rises to US$478 million

The cost of goods coming to Jamaica from the European Union jumped by almost 30 per cent for January to October 2023.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica says the value of imported goods from the trade bloc amounted to US$478.2 million for the period.

This was 29.6 per cent higher than the US$369 million spent during the comparable period in 2022.

The increased comparative spend was linked mainly to growth in the imports of "Machinery and Transport Equipment" and "Food".

The importation of "Machinery and Transport Equipment" was valued at US$165.2 million, 72 per cent above the US$96.1 million in the similar 2022 period.

Spending on "Food" amounted to US$98.1 million, an increase of 8.2 per cent when compared with the US$90.6 million spent in 2022.
