Despite fighting individual performances by 21 year old Janillea Glasgow and 19 year old Jahzara Claxton, West Indies women lost to South Africa women by 50 runs in the first T20 international in Barbados on Friday.
Coming off losing the One Day International series 2-1 to South Africa women on Tuesday, captain Hayley Matthews and the Windies women were aiming to start the T20s on a winning note.
However, that was not to be, as after winning the toss and sending the visitors in to bat, South Africa posted a solid 183-6 in their allotted overs.
They were led by a half century from opener and Player of the Match Tazmin Britz who made an unbeaten 98. Medium pacer Jahzara Claxton was the pick of Windies bowlers with figures of 3-39.
Chasing 184 to win, the Caribbean women got off the bad start in slipping to 48-4 in the 6th over, with captain Matthews and other key batters dismissed.
A recovery was attempted, as Glasglow who scored a unbeaten 53, her main international half-century, and all-rounder Chinelle Henry, who scored 26, shared in a 81 run partnership.
This was the highest partnership for the Windies women for the 6th wicket in T20 internationals, breaking the record of 44 between Stafanie Taylor and Shanel Daley.
However, the West Indies women were eventually restricted to 133-6. The second T20 international is set for Sunday at the Three W's Oval starting at 9:00 am Jamaica time.
