JPS to roll out 10 new EV charging stations

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging station network.

The company says come next year, 10 new charging stations will be established.

The move will help to increase access to facilities for streamlining electric vehicle operations locally.

Ten cashless "Charge and Go" stations have already been deployed by the light and power company.

JPS was the first to install such ports in the island for electric-powered vehicles, which are cheaper to fuel.

EverGo, another player in the EV charging station market, also has a number of stations islandwide.

To help encourage the implementation of EVs locally, the government has reduced import duties on the vehicles, from 30 to 10 per cent.

Registration fees for EVs that are three years old or less have also been waived for the next five years.

Estimates suggest that the electrification of the Jamaican transportation sector could save the country up to $284 million.
