Mining and quarrying industry grew 18.7% in first quarter of 2024

Jamaica's Mining and Quarrying industry grew by 18.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2024.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica says this was mainly due to an increase in alumina and bauxite production.

Alumina production in the first three months of the year totalled 392,835 tonnes.

That was up from 307,393 tonnes in the similar period in 2023.

Crude bauxite volumes increased by 4.6 per cent to 447,504 tonnes for January to March.

STATIN says this increased output also resulted in higher export volumes of both products.

Alumina exports grew by 32 per cent to 358,134 tonnes.

While crude bauxite exports rose by 7.4 per cent to 478,298 tonnes.
